The Ohio Weekend Getaway on Lake Erie That Most People Drive Right Past

Ohio has a long relationship with Lake Erie. But most Ohio visitors only ever see the south shore — the Ohio side. Just across the water, on the Canadian side, sits one of the most relaxed and rewarding weekend destinations in the Great Lakes region. And most Ohioans drive right past it.
Essex County, Ontario. Lake Erie's north shore. And if you haven't been, you're overdue.
How Far Is It Really?
Closer than you might think. Here's a realistic look at drive times from major Ohio cities to The Lakeside House in Essex County:
Toledo — approximately 1.5 hours via the Ambassador Bridge at Windsor-Detroit
Cleveland — approximately 3 hours
Columbus — approximately 3.5 to 4 hours
Toledo visitors in particular have an easy case to make — you're practically neighbours. Cross into Windsor via the Ambassador Bridge or the Windsor Tunnel, head south along the Lake Erie shoreline, and you arrive at a private lakefront property before you'd reach many Ohio weekend destinations.
You'll need a valid passport or US passport card to cross. The Ambassador Bridge crossing between Detroit and Windsor is one of the busiest land border crossings in North America and moves efficiently, especially on weekday evenings and early mornings.
A Different Side of Lake Erie
Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline is lovely — but it's busy. Cedar Point, Put-in-Bay, Sandusky — these are fun, but they're crowded, commercial, and not exactly a quiet retreat.
The Ontario side is genuinely different. Essex County sits at the 42nd parallel, sharing its latitude with northern California and the French Riviera, and has more sun hours than anywhere else in Canada. The landscape is quiet, rural, and beautiful. The wineries are small, family-run, and genuinely welcoming. And the shoreline feels like it belongs to you.
There are no crowds here. No tour buses. Just a long, peaceful lake, world-class sunsets, and a level of privacy that's hard to find within a few hours of any major Ohio city.
The Canadian Dollar Advantage
For Ohio visitors, the exchange rate works in your favour. Dining out, wine, groceries, and accommodation all feel like solid value compared to what you'd spend for a similar experience on the US side of the lake. A private lakefront cottage with a hot tub often costs less here than a standard hotel room in a busy Ohio resort town.
What a Weekend Looks Like from Ohio
Friday evening (from Toledo): Cross the border after work. You're at The Lakeside House in time for a late sunset over the water and a long soak in the hot tub.
Friday evening (from Columbus or Cleveland): Leave mid-afternoon, stop in Windsor for dinner, and arrive relaxed and ready for the weekend.
Saturday: Coffee by the lake. A drive out along County Road 50 to explore the Essex County wineries — Sprucewood Shores (Ontario's only beachfront winery) and Viewpointe Estate Winery are both worth your time. In the afternoon, explore the historic waterfront town of Amherstburg, just 25 kilometres south of Detroit — Fort Malden, the Detroit River waterfront, local patios. Back in time for a hot tub sunset.
Sunday: A slow morning. Maybe a walk along the shoreline at Holiday Beach Conservation Area — one of North America's top bird migration routes — before heading home feeling like you actually went somewhere.
